I’m thinking about listing my used Bible on social media… for $10,000.
You read that right. And before you scroll away, let me tell you why.
I recently heard a story about a grandson who asked his grandmother, “If your house were on fire and you could only grab one thing, what would it be?” Without hesitation, she said, “My Bible.”
That story was from 40 years ago. Bibles weren’t as accessible back then as they are now. Today, we are rich beyond measure—especially here in the West. We have access to the Bible on phones, tablets, computers, and TVs. You can pick one up for free at most churches. I personally have 3 or 4 Bible apps on my phone—one even has animated videos that explain Scripture in depth.
And yet… that’s what I find so sad and concerning.
Has increased access to the Word of God actually decreased its value in our eyes?
We rarely treasure what is free. Scarcity creates value. Discounts create hype. But abundance? That often leads to apathy.
Now think for a moment about the millions around the world who have no access to the Bible. Some only have a single chapter, hidden and memorized—because if they’re caught, that tiny fragment could cost them everything. To them, the Word of God is cherished. Priceless. Life itself.
So how do we get back to that place?
How do we return to cherishing the wisdom and wonder of the Creator of all that was, is, and is to come?
Do we stop handing Bibles out for free?
Do we lock them up and sell them for $10,000 a piece just to remind people what they’re worth?
Of course not.
But maybe… just maybe… we need to feel the weight of what we’ve been given. These words are not meant to sit on shelves or in forgotten apps. They are life to those who find them. They’re a lamp to our feet, a guide through darkness. They tell us who we are, who God is, and how the gap between us has been bridged.
They fill the void that nothing physical ever can.
So no—I’m not actually selling my Bible.
But I am trying to create a moment of scarcity in your mind. A wake-up call.
Because if you’ve made it this far, you’re not too late.
Don’t wait until access is taken from you to recognize the value of what’s right in front of you. Open it. Read it. Let it speak to you. Let it change your life like it’s changed mine.
The Words are priceless.
